Black Owned Brands I am LOVING

The movement (not a moment, people) surrounding racial injustices has brought so many brands and companies to light that are created and run by marginalised populations. Personally, I've had an incredible wake up call not only to basic human rights, but also amazing brands that are worth supporting rather than huge, commercialised, capitalistic companies.

I've been finding Black-owned brands that I love on Instagram, and I thought I would share so everyone can widen their lenses and support smaller businesses, too! As always, doing your own research is incredible too, whether it be finding brands or educating yourself on injustices alive in our world today.

Here's my List of Black Owned Brands I'm Loving:

1. Telfar Global
Telfar is a Black-owned brand from NYC. It's a unisex line of accessories including bags, hats, and belts. What I love about this brand is how simple and chic their products are. The shopping bags are gorgeous and come in a variety of sizes and colours. Compared to big fashion brands, they're not too spendy either, but still so smart, which is a huge plus!

2. Louise Meddar
Another accessories brand, this London based company has stunningly simple and elegant bags, tags,  and purses. They have some fab neutral colours ( I looove neutrals) and a variety of professional bags and cases for laptops like bags, slips, and travel tags. When I get a job in London soon, I'll definitely be getting one so I can look elegant and professional. Also, the LM logo branding just so happens to be my initials so I extra love it.

The creator made a complete 180 of her career in order to pursue her dreams, which I think is so admirable because I have already done it once and will probably do it ten more times in my life! Also Louise never found designs that she loved and spoke to her so she just made her own! I think that's really cool and am starting to think I need to make my own shoes because I never find ones that are comfy and cute and support my arches (LisaTheCobblerx).

Here's an image of four of the brand's pics on Insta, I love the aesthetic of their gram too much not to share. Instagram: @louisemeddarlondon
Products: Olivia Crossbody £295 & Marisa Purse £200

3. FVCED
This brand is technically not a brand but a business (tbh, idk the difference between brand, business, and company) that sells used designer goods! I love this because not only is the owner, Isis Scott, running an independent-Black-female-small business, BUT selling designer goods is a great way to recycle fashion and help the environment, and help people who can't afford thousand dollar bags get a little luxury in their lives. Items are authenticated, too, which is huge for the vintage/used designer industry! I would suggest following these brands on Instagram and turning on post notifications to get notified immediately when products are available, because when they're gone, they're gone!

4. Yam NYC
YAM is a New York jewellery brand that says "Ode to my mother" in the insta bio so obviously I already love it. What I ~really~ love about it though is how delicate each piece is! There're so many cute, gold pieces that have gorgeous additions like little charms or Bonar pearls! Delicate little jewellery pieces like Yam's are my favourite and this brand's pieces are a fab price! Plus, they are handmade from upcycled materials, so a win all around.

5. Third Crown
Another NY jewellery brand (I have a type), but this brand is screams, "statement jewellery with geometric influence!" The co-creators and designers (who I think are married) make men and women's high-end jewellery that will definitely get you noticed. Their pieces don't look like jewellery they look like art!

I couldn't choose one picture because they're all so glam!

6. The Koop NYC
The Koop is a small handmade candle company based in Brooklyn. I obviously can't smell candles over the internet, but I have no doubt the soy and coconut wax is divine. Also the glasses are recyclable or reusable, so worth it anyhow!

The scents that capture my attention are:
Penthouse = linen scent with hints of coconut and beach air -- $19
Slow Sunday = clean laundry with notes of lavender -- $19
Golden Hour = "light, fresh, and sparkling...reminiscent of a glass of rose" sign me up ASAP - $19

Silk candle is currently sold out.

7. Dorcas Creates
Dorcas Magbadelo is a UK artist who sells her illustrations on things like earrings, notebooks, and pins (lots more though!) I love supporting small artists and her illustrations are gorgeous! Also, her illustrations are mainly of Black women, which is incredibly for representation!

PLUS, she mentions she is largely self-taught! Which I think is amazing because I can barely draw a stick figure. She illustrates legit masterpieces and THEN she creates products, markets them, etc., on her own! She's incredible. During non-COVID-19 times she also does workshop and talks according to her CV on her website, so that would be a really cool event to attend!

Thanks for reading everyone! I really hope people continue to educate themselves and shop small. Even though instagram hype may be dying down, don't forget to continue to do the work! Still tons of work to do regarding racism and human rights -- this is just one way to start consciously thinking about your impact and footprint on consumerism and injustices!

Please Comment below Black-owned brands you love! And DM me any other small business that support the oppressed, or that donate, match donations, serve others!

xoxo
Lisa
